Today I want to share Marina Tsapelas’ story! Marina likes to go by Nina.. So I will be referring to her as Nina 🙂 Please be sure to follow her amazing journey online via instagram at @poloprincessnyc and on her blog at www.poloprincessnyc.com
I usually title theses interviews with “weight loss story” or “weight loss transformation.” But Nina’s story is much more than just a weight transformation.
A week before her sweet sixteen, Nina suffered a horrible car accident. She was crossing the street, when a car ran the red light. Next thing she knows, she was in the hospital!!
God has a purpose
After hearing in details about her accident, and only her clavicle broke and nothing else was wrong. It only strengthens my belief in miracles. God truly has a greater purpose for Nina’s life and talking with her personally I can truly understand.
Nina tells me that she had an amazing childhood and was very popular in school. She has always been confident and comfortable in her skin and that kind of confidence at the same time humility, truly draws people near you. She says she has always been very active and was a Tomboy and never worried about weight.
After the accident
But after the accident, the story started to change! Nina was in the hospital for two weeks, because the doctors wanted to find something wrong after such a bad accident. But they didn’t find anything and discharged her. Being in the hospital for 2 weeks plus recovering from the broken clavicle. Nina had 100% of her family’s attention and they wanted to comfort her the best way possible. How was that? with comfort food!
So what did Nina do? She ate! And this is where I can totally relate with her! In her words “it was mindless” and she quickly gained the weight. The accident was not a path to depression that caused her to eat. She never suffered depression in this period. It’s was simply mindless eating. She was confined to a room and her family was trying to comfort her in the best way they thought possible. And without noticing, she gained the weight.
Always felt beautiful
Nina is walking and breathing proof that it’s not your outer shell that determines your beauty. Unfortunately I did not have the confidence she had when I was suffering from obesity. I was so aware of my size and that affected me. I was happy, always felt happy. But I didn’t feel beautiful and comfortable in my own skin. Not Nina, she always felt beautiful and confident! And that is a message I hope every lady can learn. Feeling happy and beautiful doesn’t come with a goal that’s been achieved. It’s how you determine you want to feel. You don’t need to lose the weight to feel beautiful! You are beautiful! Embrace that!
I asked Nina if she ever felt big and uncomfortable. She couldn’t remember feeling that way. She said. “No, I guess I was in denial.” I never realized how big I was. And now I don’t really realize how small I am.”
Wake up call
Nina said that the wake up call was, analyzing her life. She has a masters in psychology and when she took a moment to organize herself. She realized she wasn’t truly happy and needed to change. You will also see in the video, Nina sharing her experience on going on job interviews. She saw how the world painted a very ugly picture of people that are obese.
Nina said that after speaking to her mother and realizing how she needed to change her lifestyle, she sought a doctor to undergo gastric bypass surgery. She said he asked her what else she had tried. She then realized, she never tried anything. Her first try was going to see the doctor and seek a surgery to change her life! It would definitely change!! After he explained what would happen and how she would have to live the rest of her life, she was terrified. She left the doctor’s office convinced that surgery was not going to be an option.
Eliminated the average woman
Nina has lost 140 pounds so far… That is the average woman. She has literally lost a person!!
I can go on for hours, writing about Nina! But I’m sure you guys rather hear it directly from her. We spoke for hours and thanks to the awesome videographer Jeffrey Restrepo… who managed to cut it down to 30 minutes!
